An defence minister has confirmed that the MoD is currently looking into the potential threats associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been told to refrain from discussing classified matters in all vehicles.
Security Guidance for MoD Personnel
In a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD staff have been told not to talk about classified information while riding in China-made cars.
He explained that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but stressed that safety is a concern in all modern cars.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug MoD devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any kind of car, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those secret talks in protected areas. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Security Context
The announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring disruption to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
This wider security situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and caution in every aspects of government operations, from transport usage to communication habits.
